KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) – Google’s annual “Year of Search” is back with new filters to reveal what cities and regions around the country were searching for in an eventful 2022.
Google’s annual review of search data from past years provided a snapshot of the year’s trends around the world and in some countries. For the first time, search insights from specific US cities and surrounding counties are now available in the new Local Search Year.
According to Google, the Knoxville area had more searches for rock and roll in 2022 than any other place in the United States. However, Google says that country remains Knoxville’s most searched music genre.
Knoxville was the only place in the country where the sloth bear, a vulnerable species native to the Indian subcontinent, was considered the trendiest animal.
The Knoxville area was three times more likely to search for gas near me in 2022 than in 2021. It’s no surprise that “gas prices near me” was the top “near me” search in America in 2022.

The most popular recipe search in the Knoxville area was “ranch water,” a drink made with tequila, mineral water, and lime juice. Knoxville was one of four locations in Salisbury, Maryland, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and Salinas, California for this top trending recipe.
Netflix’s Inventing Anna, which chronicled the rise and fall of convicted con artist Anna Sorkin, emerged as the No. 5 trending TV show in America in 2022. Rachel Williams, a Knoxville resident and former friend of Sorokin’s, sued Netflix over her. figure in the series.
