The absolutely stunning final of the World Cup came to an end. It was the best and most brutal match in World Cup memory. That was the best play I’ve seen in sports, period. No description is too strong. In the end, Argentina won the 2022 final in Qatar on penalties, cementing the legacy of Lionel Messi as one of the best footballers ever to do so.

All the while, the internet couldn’t believe it, and everyone lost their minds for three hours. Here is a brief overview of what happened.

Argentina led most of the match in full time. In the 23rd minute, Messi made a mistake from the penalty spot. Angel Di Maria followed it up with a fine finish in the 36th minute. It looked like Argentina and Messi the goat would go on to win the title. No.

Enter France and superstar Kylian Mbappe, 23. He scored from the penalty spot in the 80th minute, then scored a spectacular strike a minute later. It was absolutely stunning and absolute brilliance from the French.

It happened already incredible meeting. From there, the game was even more nuts. It was watching two teams hang on for dear life. France attacked, Argentina countered. Argentina attacked, France countered. Messi almost won it all with a brilliant strike, it was just saved by the French keeper. But we went to extra time.

In the extra time, in the 108th minute, Messi made a shot. He hit a bounce ball home, all but assured the win. No. Because THEN Argentina’s handball in the 118th minute resulted in a penalty that Mbappe blew away. And we went to penalties.

Messi and Mbappe both scored in the penalty shootout to give their teams the lead. But then France missed twice and Argentina were perfect to take the title 4-2 on penalties. There has never been a game like this.

When the game ended, emotions ran high. Argentina fans cried. So did the French. People were celebrating and cheering for Messi who had finally achieved the one thing that had eluded him in football. The tweets were also fantastic when the game was over.

It was a fantastic match that will live with fans for years to come.
