Hundreds of Bell Aliant customers on Fredericton’s north side were without Internet, TV and home phone service Tuesday due to copper thieves.
Police were on the scene at the corner of Sunset Drive and Route 105 while Bell Aliant crews worked on repairs.
“Bell Aliant crews are restoring damage to our network in the Fredericton area, once again caused by copper theft,” Bell Aliant wrote.
“This vandalism affected internet, TV and home phones for over 800 customers. We would like our customers to know that we are taking this matter very seriously, working closely with local law enforcement. We urge the public to call 911 if seen. suspicious activity”.
Luke Plourde said his family spent the entire day without internet access.
“It’s almost like having no power at all,” he said. “We rely so much on our internet.”
He said he left the house this morning to walk his dog, initially thinking it was his house that had been damaged.
“There was a policeman there and two Mr. Bells,” Plourde said. “I looked at the pole and there were wires that had been cut.”
He lives directly across the street from where the Bell Aliant crews and police were stationed.
Plourde said he has not been contacted by Bell Aliant or seen the company’s tweet, but said he assumed his Internet outage was related to the theft simply because of all the wires left hanging from the poles.
“That’s a bit worrying,” said Plourde. “You start to worry about your own things if they’re being taken from utilities.
