A widespread internet and cell outage in the coastal area today was the result of a PG&E service call.

A Comcast spokesman said this afternoon that its technicians were on the scene of a downed power pole in the Santa Cruz Mountains.

“The large tree took down PG&E power lines, and our services were also affected during those repairs,” Comcast spokeswoman Joan Hammel said.

In an earlier tweet, the cable company said it would have to wait for power to be restored before it could work on its equipment. The accident also affected AT&T as well as Verizon service on the coast.

A PG&E spokesman said the work is an attempt to restore power to the area.

“In response to a public safety risk, PG&E crews restoring power near La Honda removed a utility line that was down across a wet roadway…” PG&E spokeswoman Carly Hernandez said.

Hernandez said 52 customers were without power in the La Honda area for most of the day due to a downed tree. He predicted that power would be restored at 5 p.m

Hamel said there is no estimate yet on when all the damage will be repaired, but there are anecdotal reports that internet service is returning along the coast.
