CHICO – Chico organizations are looking to build community by packing ready-to-go bags full of essential bio supplies.
The South Chico Community Assistance Center is hosting a homeless collection day on Monday from 10 a.m. to noon and 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., located at 1805 Park Ave.
The center is partnering with the California Climate Action Corps and Norcal Resist Chico to organize the event, and plans to make 100 kits.
Volunteers can join and participate in the preparation of kits with essential items that will later be distributed to people experiencing homelessness.
Juan Arajuo, an organizer with Norcal Resist Chico, said putting together a kit includes preparing a backpack with toiletries, beans, socks, gloves, over-the-counter medications, batteries, blankets and more.
“That’s the stuff we usually hand out. things that we know people on the street need and don’t necessarily have access to,” Arajuo said. “A lot of people on the street get money, but this way they don’t have to spend what little money they have on basic goods.”
The collected packages will be distributed by Norcal Resist Chico to other homeless service organizations and during their regular Tuesday distributions located at Fred Davis City Hall’s Our Hands sculpture, 241 E. Fourth St.
