My name is Brittany Welch and I am a displaced resident currently living with my family in a hotel in Port Orange. I support my mother, my sister and her five children: four boys aged 15, 16, 7 and 20 months and one girl aged 6.
Storm Yan forced us out of our homes and into a hotel. The flood was incredibly severe, destroying our lives and livelihoods. About 75% of our house was damaged, making it unlivable. We lost everything.
I don’t even remember how many days we live in this hotel. It has become our second home.

FEMA helped with our hotel costs. But my goal is to return home. I contacted the FBH VCAN helpline and Sofia has been providing food, supplies and trying to help my family find a rental house.
My family and I are just trying to get our lives back together. We support each other. But the children want to go home.
I am thankful to FBH Community VCAN for being there to help us and other families in our community.
My New Years wish is to be out of this hotel before Christmas. My family needs more gifts than I do. Baby needs a high chair and the other boys will probably want some new clothes (size XL). I would also like to buy a special gift for someone at my workplace.
It’s important to give back and help others like FBH does. I recently brought decorative hooks for the hotel Christmas tree. The cafeteria manager was happy to get them because he couldn’t find them in any store. What you get back when you give is incredible. It feels great to give to others.
About this series. FBH Community’s mission is to support community organizations that actively work to eradicate the causes of generational poverty. The FBH community hosts programs such as Food Brings Hope’s KidsZone, TeenZone, FBHonors and Change the Code, Pierson Family Literacy, Homes Bring Hope and the FBH Prosperity Initiative to help hardworking families struggling with hunger, housing insecurity, underemployment and against low literacy rates. Funds are covered by the Hosseini Family Foundation, so 100% of donations go directly to the programs and families. During the holidays, The News-Journal highlights the organization by publishing the stories of its young participants.
