Given Hawaii’s proximity to Australia, it’s no surprise the 42-year-old is heading home for a few weeks before returning to play again on tour. Scott announced Sunday that he will next compete at the Genesis Invitational in mid-February.
When Scott revealed his schedule, one question naturally had to be asked: Why wait for Riviera, where Scott has one win, one unofficial win (the tournament was just 36 holes), two seconds and seven top-10s in 14 starts, and no? c returns a week early to compete in the WM Phoenix Open, the next of the tour’s 13 “designated” events with a $20 million purse.
That’s when Scott got a little careless.
“Well, I don’t have a good reason for you,” Scott said. “The reason it’s embarrassing is because I actually thought it happened in Phoenix, Pebble, Los Angeles, so I didn’t even think about it in the first place.”
Since the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am (Feb. 2-5) was an event he wasn’t going to play in, Scott figured he’d skip Phoenix to spend the extra week Down Under. At some point he learned that Pebble was actually ahead of Phoenix (February 9-12), but at that point his plans were put on hold.
The misfortune could obviously cost Scott the purse, but the bigger issue is that the 14-time Tour winner will use his one “excused absence” from a designated event to remain eligible for the PGA Tour’s Player Impact. Program: Despite this, Scott is content to keep his schedule as it is.
“Yeah, I think spending a bit of time at home in Australia feels really good for me after not going home for two and a half years,” Scott said, “so the extra week is nice.”
