Florida Panthers quarterback Aaron Ekblad has already missed 10 games this season with a groin injury and could miss again.

Ekblad went to the room after a brief altercation with New York Islanders forward Oliver Wahlstrom early in the first period of Friday night’s game at UBS Arena.

Wahlstrom was aggressive after a botched shot against Sergey Bobrovsky, and Ekblad took exception.

Ekblad chased Wahlstrom into the backboards and threw several punches, resulting in penalties for both players.

But it turned out that after the second hit, Ekblad went down.

It could be a shoulder injury for the Florida quarterback. Ekblad pointed over his right shoulder to his face as things broke and he was sliding towards the bench.

“Ekblad” did not return to the game. The Panthers took a 1-0 lead on Matthew Tkachuk’s goal at 8:09.

In the second period, Florida declared Ekblad questionable to return, which is actually quite reassuring given the severity of the injury.

Ekblad did not return with coach Paul Morris saying he is day-to-day but will be evaluated by the team’s medical staff Saturday in South Florida.

Not only did Ekblad miss time earlier this season, but he’s been cut short the past two seasons by separate leg injuries.

This is breaking news and will be updated.
