NFL franchises use contextual data to create a competitive advantage. To realize the benefits, teams must use the right data in the right way at the right time. This means distilling, interpreting and applying only the most impactful data within a framework that takes into account personnel, opponents and evolving game situations. My goal is to be YOUR analytics department. Each week this season, I want to work for you by presenting which numbers my models say are the most influential… or the most misunderstood.

As always, let me know if your eye test reveals anything interesting, or if there are any stats/trends you’d like me to take a deeper look at. You can hit me up on Twitter @CFrelund:. Like any large analytics department, the more collaborative this is, the more value we can create.

Sure enough, it’s been a minute. I hope you’ve had a chance to check out my NFL+ game previews that we post every week. But we’re back here at NFL.com for the run and the playoffs. What better way to get back into it than by spreading a little holiday cheer. Six teams have qualified for the playoffs, while only five have been eliminated from postseason contention by Week 16. There are 13 teams that still have hope but are currently on the outside of the playoffs. So for those teams, I’ve highlighted the area’s advanced data flags as a strength that could help them steal one of the eight remaining postseason spots. I also included their playoff chances in Week 16, according to my model.

I think there is always room for hope. And if you’re not a glass-half-full person, you might as well look at these positive traits as a foundation to build on for the next season.

Please have a happy and safe holiday. I look forward to making 2023 the best year together.
