Lotte Giants (KBO) Analyst, R&D

Location: Busan, South Korea

The Lotte Giants, an inaugural member of the KBO (Korea Baseball Organization) league, is seeking an analyst to work out of the front office at Sajik Stadium in Busan, South Korea. The KBO was founded in 1982 and is the highest level of professional baseball in South Korea. Consisting of ten teams, the league is divided into two divisions and each team plays a total of 144 games. Lotte Giants is located in Busan, the country’s second largest city on the southeast coast of the Korean Peninsula.

The Research and Development team is involved in all aspects of the organization, including but not limited to Major League Operations, Player Personnel, Intelligence, Advanced Intelligence, Player Development and Sports Science. The department is responsible for overseeing and implementing all processes related to data and technology within the organization. The current division was the first of its kind in the KBO and set the standard for quantitative analysis in professional baseball leagues abroad. The incumbent Analyst will have the opportunity to make a huge impact on the day-to-day operations of the organization while continuing to support the expansion of the R&D department. Responsibilities of the Inbound Analyst include, but are not limited to:

  • Use the current player evaluation infrastructure to assist the GM in making player personnel decisions
  • Expand the current player rating system
  • Propose new design ideas and take initiative to help improve current processes
  • Lead the research and development departments’ intelligence advancement activities
  • Use predictive modeling infrastructure to help players optimize their skills
  • Maintain and enhance departmental back-end data science architecture
  • Be the link between the R&D department and the first team manager
  • Provide feedback to coaching staff to improve in-game strategy

Ideal candidate primarily using R or Python and SQL, and has some background and knowledge of baseball-specific sabermetric processes. The department will place a high priority on candidates with experience building models and translating raw data into practical, usable information. Some understanding of biomechanics and sports science would be a plus, as would previous experience with roster building and advanced scouting. Critical thinking skills will be highly valued for this position, as the analyst will serve as an important member of the decision-making team.

There are no specific educational prerequisites for this position, although experience in data science, computer science, and/or related computing, whether academic or professional, will be considered. The ability to speak Korean is not required for this role, although the ability to do so is an advantage.
