MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) — Jessica Pegula began her bid for a first Grand Slam singles title with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Jacqueline Christian in the first round of the Australian Open on Monday.
Third-seeded Pegula, a quarter-finalist in Melbourne the past two years, needed just 59 minutes to defeat the 161st-ranked Romanian, who was playing in his third Grand Slam tournament.
“Today is just one of those days, everything was working,” said the American.
In the second round, Pegula will play either Czech qualifier Brenda Fruhvirtova or Aliaksandra Sasnovich.
