Like yesterday, I will broadcast live today. This time, however, all the news will be about the opening day of international free agency and exactly who the Cubs are adding today. This year’s signing period runs until December 15th. Almost all players will be assigned to either the Red or Blue team this year and will begin playing by early June. A Mabe player or two could slide to Mesa or Myrtle Beach like Alfredo Zaraga did last year. To see who the Cubs have signed over the last few years, click here to go to us IFA database.
Cubs this year they are tied with three top 30 names all fall – SS Dernic Valdez, SS Ludwig Espinoza and SS Angel Cepeda. Not all will play SS, but they are all well thought out prospects.
But those won’t be the only names we see and hear today. The Cubs have $5,284,000 to spend this year, and they won’t blow it all today, but they’re spending most of it. A lot of unknown guys are going to be inked. It will be fun to learn about them. Normally, Baseball America provides a preview for each team’s signing class, but that didn’t happen this winter.
Here’s what we know about the three players the Cubs are linked to today.
Dernic Valdes
“Valdez has quick twitch action that shows in the batter’s box where he has quick hands to get the barrel through the zone with good speed.” ~ baseball America
Ludwig Espinoza (BA calls him Ludwig)
“He has a sound swing, a mature approach and good skills from both sides of the plate, showing a little more juice from the left side.” ~ Baseball America.
Angel Cepeda
“He can play shortstop, second base and third. He’s also athletic enough to play center field. Wherever he ends up playing, he’s also very likely to have an impact when he’s in the batter’s box.” ~Jesse Sanchez – MLB Pipeline
Names and pictures should start coming in at 8am.
