Why 49 can cover
San Francisco arguably has the best defense in the league. Led by relentless offensive lineman Joey Bosa, the 49ers lead the league in both scoring defense (15.2 points per game) and total defense (286.8 yards per game). The 15.2 points per game average is the second-best of any team since the start of the 2014 season, trailing only the 2019 Patriots (14.1). Bosa is tied for the NFL lead in sacks (14.5) and has at least one sack in six of his last seven games.
Additionally, running back Christian McCaffrey has found his stride in San Francisco. Over the past six games, the former Panthers star has 680 yards and six touchdowns. He had his best game since being traded to the 49ers last week, with 119 rushing yards and two touchdowns. See which team to pick here.
Why the Seahawks can cover
Seattle is sixth in scoring after finishing last season, and quarterback Geno Smith has been a major reason for the improvement. The Seahawks are averaging 26.3 points and Smith is serving as the starting quarterback for the New York Jets for the first time since 2014. The 32-year-old ranks third in the league with a 106.8 passer rating, fourth with 25 touchdowns and sixth with 3,433 passing yards, the latter two a career high and the former a personal best.
Smith has one of the best receiving duos to work with in Tyler Lockett and D.K. Lockett, who is looking for his fourth straight 1,000-yard rush, leads Seattle with 896 yards on 71 receptions, while Metcalf has a team-high 72 catches for 869 yards. Lockett, 30, who is six years older, has a touch in a record six games and leads the club with eight goals, while Metcalf has six. See which team to pick here.
