Joel and Ellie’s apocalyptic journey has arrived HBO Max: this weekend as the first episode The Last of Us has landed on a streaming service. The show adapts the legendary PlayStation video game series from developer Naughty Dog, the nine-episode Season 1 focuses on the franchise’s original entry.

The show premiered on Sunday, with episodes every week until March 12.

Here’s the full release schedule for The Last of Us on HBO Max, and we’ll update it if the company announces any changes or breaks. New episodes will arrive at 6 p.m. (9 p.m. ET), which you may remember as a time slot. House of the dragon last year.

The show goes down around the world at the same time, so there are times for several regions.

What is The Last of Us?

Set in a world where a horrific fungal brain infection has turned most of the world’s population into vicious cannibals, the games follow mischievous smuggler Joel and his cheerful teenage friend Ellie as they travel across a ravaged US.

Who’s in it?

The series stars The Mandalorian’s Pedro Pascal as Joel and his Game of Thrones co-star Bella Ramsey as Ellie. Also featured are Parks and Recreation actor Nick Offerman, Fringe’s Anna Torv and Yellowjackets’ Melanie Lynskey.

Written by Craig Mazin (Creator of HBO’s Chernobyl) and Neil Druckman (Creative Director of the game series) added this to give newcomers a solid foundation:

Is there a trailer?

Yes, HBO has given us a few tastes of the show. The most recent trailer arrived in December.

How scary is that?

It’s more of a thriller than a horror, with plenty of intense moments. The infected do not appear often. Joel and Ellie encounter more human survivors than monsters, but they make a big impact when they do.

Do I have to play the games?

No, the show retells the events of the first game (which was released in 2013), enhanced with some plot and background elements. However, The Last of Us and its 2020 sequel are some of the most exciting games ever created. You should definitely dive in if you’re interested in the show.

The original game is available on PS3, PS4 and PS5 (the PC version will be released on March 3rd), while the latter is currently only on PS4.
