The fans Saturday Night Live were more than a little surprised when Cecily Strong, one of the sketch comedy show’s strongest players, returned for her 48th season this October.
SNL: Having just experienced a wave of high-profile departures – Kate McKinnon, Aidy Bryant, Pete Davidson, Kyle Mooney, Alex Moffat, Chris Redd, Melissa Villaseñor and Aristotle Attari – before the season started, Strong wasn’t the only one. the first few weeks were off due to her one-woman show, but also an Apple TV+ series Shmigadoon! picked up a second season to strong reviews.
After Strong’s Kimberly Guilfoyle hijacked a Trump (James Austin Johnson) infomercial selling NFTs to his gullible fans while pushing his own Christmas album, the 11-year veteran was duly sent off on Weekend Update :
Appearing as “two-time Heisman Trophy thief Katie Ann,” one of Strong’s longest-running bits, the comedian entered in a pink T-shirt and Santa hat, struggling to light a cigarette.
“It covers a giant open wound,” he said of the Santa hat. “I scalped a bit… I fell asleep on the escalator. It’s just a mess here. But at least now the curtains match the curtains.’
“You know, I’m actually a little bit emo tonight because, the truth is, I’m here to say goodbye,” he added.
When “Weekend Update” co-host Michael Che asked her where she was going, Strong’s Cathy Ann exclaimed, “It turns out. jail All the crimes I’ve confessed to you here for the past seven years have finally caught up with me. You know, drug use, breaking the law, destroying property, hacking, pretending to be a cop, and some crack… and doing some Sonic attacks.” (By that he meant “working upstairs at Sonic.”)
“I think it will actually give me some much needed stability. And I’m not too scared because I have friends on the inside and they seem to be doing well,” he explained, throwing up a photo of Kate McKinnon and Aidy Bryant in prison, covered in tattoos.
Then, tearing up, Strong (as Cathy Ann) broke character a bit, saying, “Right now is my time. But I had a lot of fun here and I feel really lucky to have spent the best moments of my life in this place, with these people that I love so much.”
