Twisters, the sequel to the 1996 disaster epic Twister, will wreak havoc in theaters in the summer of 2024.

Universal, which is backing the film, has released Twisters on July 19, 2024.

On its current release date, Twisters will hit the big screen with Paramount’s Transformers. alongside A New Generation and a week before Marvel’s Thunderbolts.

Lee Isaac Chung, who directed Minari to multiple Oscar nominations, directs Twisters. The script will be written by Mark L. Smith, who co-wrote Alejandro Iñárritu’s Academy Award-winning film The Survivor, starring Leonardo DiCaprio.

The original Twister was a huge hit, earning nearly $500 million at the worldwide box office, largely due to its groundbreaking special effects. In addition to its commercial glory, “Twister” received Academy Award nominations for best visual effects and sound.

Helen Hunt, Bill Paxton, Cary Elwes and Philip Seymour Hoffman star as storm-chasing scientists trying to conquer the most powerful tornado in decades. Plot details for the sequel, which has been in development since 2020, remain unclear. It’s similarly unclear how the films are connected, though Universal describes the remake as “a new chapter from the 1996 film.”

“Twisters” will be co-financed by Warner Bros. by Pictures. Frank Marshall, whose films include such major franchises as “Jurassic World,” “Indiana Jones” and “The Bourne,” as well as “The Sixth Sense” and “Purple,” is producing through his Kennedy/Marshall company.

Universal VP of Production Sarah Scott and Executive Creative Director Jacqueline Garrel will oversee production for the studio, with Ashley J. Sandberg overseeing Kennedy/Marshall.
