Ever since Titanic came out 25 years ago, debate has raged over a pivotal scene near the end that has become almost as iconic as the film itself.

Now, director James Cameron hopes to put to rest speculation that Jack (Leonardo DiCaprio) could have survived the infamous ocean sinking if only his beloved Rose (Kate Winslet) had given him a little nudge on the floating door. which kept him away from the icy waters that eventually claimed so many lives. (It’s a conundrum that has prompted comments from Hollywood stars like Brad Pitt and Margot Robbie, as well as Winslet herself in the past.)

Cameron said he carried out a “forensic” study to show the door could not have supported both.

“We’ve done a scientific study to put this whole thing to rest and put a stake through his heart once and for all,” Cameron told The Toronto Sun on Friday.

“We then did a thorough forensic analysis with a hypothermic expert who recreated the raft from the movie,” he continued, adding that they used “two stuntmen who were the same body mass as Kate and Leo, and we put sensors on them.” on. and inside them, and we put them in ice water and tested them to see if they could survive using different methods, and the answer was, there was no way they could both survive.”

“Only one could survive,” Cameron said.

According to Cameron, the research will become a National Geographic special for the Titanic’s 25th anniversary 4K re-release. Although the network has yet to reveal details.

CNN has reached out to National Geographic for comment.

Cameron, who had previously commented on an episode of Mythbusters that explored whether Jack should die, ended up taking it all out in an artistic decision.

“No, he has to die,” Cameron said in a new interview. “It’s like Romeo and Juliet. It is a film about love, sacrifice and mortality. Love is measured by sacrifice.”

“Avatar. The Water Road director added that his hope for the new Titanic special and Jack’s death scene is that “maybe… maybe… in 25 years I won’t have to do this anymore.”
