Spider-Man. Into the Spider-Versee was unlike anything fans had ever seen. It look, sound, story, all of it created specifically to be new, fresh and innovative. Now with no one but two, sequels on the wayfilmmakers have to deal with that, and much more.
Spider-Man. Through the Spider-Verseout in June, and Spider-Man. Beyond the Spider-VerseDue out in 2024, it should both live up to that first film’s level and innovate beyond it. That’s just the DNA of the series. Plus, then a huge critical and financial success there’s also the added weight of fan expectations in the first film. If audiences don’t see something at least as good or better than the Oscar-winning original, everyone involved will hear about it.
“There’s a lot of pressure on these movies because you want the movie to deliver a compelling story and an emotional journey,” said producer and co-writer Chris Miller. The Wrap:. “You also want it to be everything that people hope for, but then you also want it to be something that people didn’t even know they wanted.”
Across the spider-section will do so even at the most basic level, being flat out bigger. This film takes place in six dimensions, unlike the first film’s single, and has 240 characters, as opposed to the first film’s 40. It is one of the greatest animated films of all time.
“It’s definitely crazier,” said producer and co-writer Phil Lord. “We finally pissed some people off. I feel like we did our job.” Which is reassuring to hear, because as described above, the job of making two sequels to one of the best animated films ever is no easy feat.

“The whole idea of these movies is that we’re showing you something you’ve never seen before,” Miller said. “And if we just did a fun bland story that felt like the first movie, I think it would be a little disappointing. You want to feel like you’re seeing visuals you’ve never experienced before. Doing all those things and doing them in an engaging and satisfying way is a big challenge, but it’s also why we do these things. That’s the goal, just to make you laugh and cry and feel something you’ve never felt before.”
We are just beginning to see what that means the first full trailer and posters. We can certainly expect more in the coming months leading up to June 2, 2023, when Spider-Man. Through the Spider-Verse hits theaters and heads to The Wrap: much more for not just Spider-Man, but the entire history of Sony Pictures Animation.
