Henry Cavill will not be returning as Geralt of Rivia in Netflix’s hit The Witcher, despite losing his role as Superman in a shakeup to the DC Extended Universe.

“We can confirm that there are no changes to The Witcher Season 4,” Netflix told CNN on Friday.

Peter Friedlander, Netflix’s head of scripted series for the US and Canada, addressed the decision to continue with a season 4 starring Liam Hemsworth for the first time in a wide-ranging interview with Variety published on Wednesday.

“Henry is an extraordinary Geralt, and I think Liam will continue to be an extraordinary Geralt as well,” Friedlander said.

He added that he’s confident the casting change won’t change the show’s popularity because “there’s a legacy of amazing, iconic characters left where the actors have changed, and we’re extremely optimistic about that.” We will continue to respect IS, the fans, the history of the stories until the end.”

Cavill announced his departure from The Witcher in October, just days after revealing he was reprising his role as Superman. At the time, she told fans she was passing the torch “excited to see Liam’s treatment of these most wonderful and nuanced men.”

While the British actor did not give a reason for his departure, it was widely believed that he left the Netflix series to commit to returning as Superman, the DC Comics character he first portrayed in 2013’s Man of Steel. He even appeared as Superman at the end of Black Adam starring Dwayne Johnson.

However, things took an unexpected turn this week when it was revealed that Cavill will no longer wear the red cape after turning down the role. Director and writer James Gunn, who joined DC Studios in October as co-chairman with Peter Safran, has confirmed plans to write a new Superman movie that will focus on a younger version of the superhero. (Like CNN, DC Studios is a subsidiary of Warner Bros. Discovery)

“Sad news, everyone. After all, I’m not coming back as Superman,” Cavill wrote on Instagram on Wednesday. “After being told by the studio that I would be announcing my return back in October before they were hired, this news is not the easiest, but that’s life. The changing of the guard is something that happens. I respect that.”

The news reignited calls for Netflix to recast Cavill instead of letting Hemsworth, as one fan tweeted: the series will be released without Cavill.
