Black Friday is so hyped. The day after Thanksgiving is when you’ll usually find plenty of deals on everything from toys to clothing to electronics. And often, the prices you’ll find on Black Friday are the lowest prices you’ll find all year (although that’s not guaranteed always is the case).
But not everyone shops on Black Friday. And in a recent PYMNTS report, these were four reasons why some consumers opted out of the big event.
1. Crowded shops
For 31% of those who didn’t shop on Black Friday, crowded stores were a deal breaker. The reality is that many people have started shopping online during the pandemic, and as a result, they are now less excited about waiting in long shopping lines and elbowing others in stores. If you’ve decided you can’t deal with your Black Friday shoppers, don’t sweat it.
2. Lack of funds
A good 29% of people who went through Black Friday said they didn’t have enough money to shop that day. And they made a very smart decision. It’s not a good idea to shop when money is tight, as this is a great way to end up with credit card debt. A much better route is to save ahead of time so you can fully cover your Black Friday shopping. And so, if you missed out on Black Friday because you didn’t save up for it, you made a very healthy choice.
3. Desire to wait
A lot of great deals can be found on Black Friday. But that doesn’t mean bargains can’t emerge after the fact. Here’s why 18% of those who skipped Black Friday did so. they specifically wanted to wait and see what other deals came down. Now, we don’t know if those same people ended up taking advantage of Cyber Monday. But chances are the Monday after Thanksgiving was loaded with deals, too.

For 15% of people who didn’t shop on Black Friday, the reason was because the deals weren’t good enough. While retailers tend to offer discounts in a number of categories on Black Friday, sometimes those deals aren’t quite as substantial. If you’re not a big fan of big retail events and you’ve seen most of the items you’re interested in marked down by only 10% or 15%, this might be a reason to say no to Black Friday shopping.
It’s okay to miss out on Black Friday
There is a lot of pressure to shop on Black Friday. Marketers like to instill in consumers that if they don’t hit the stores that day, they’ll miss out on huge deals that they’ll never find again.
But the reality is that it’s perfectly okay to skip Black Friday and shop at other times for the holidays, or even not shop at all. So, if you decide to take advantage of the Black Friday deals this year, rest assured that you haven’t made a foolish choice. If anything, you’ve probably been wise.
