Are you looking for a way to make extra money, and you want to do it without a lot of effort, since you already work a lot. In other words, you should consider trying to make money with your phone.
If it’s a goal, you should be able to score. There are a number of phone apps and websites that can help people earn extra money. However, if you are solely looking for strategies to make money with your phone, preferably without leaving the comfort of your couch, you can do it. Here are some ideas to keep in mind.
1. Get cash back when you shop.
This is one of the most obvious and easiest ways to make money with your phone. There are many sites that offer ways to get cash back when you shop. A few include:
- Capital One shopping.
- Get rewards.
All of these cashback sites work differently, and alas, you can’t always use more than one at a time. But the main takeaway from cashback sites is that they can be worth using. Cashback sites will generally give a small discount, often shaving 3% to 5% off the retail price of what you buy. If you use cash back sites and shop with a credit card that offers cash back, you can do better.
2. Take a survey and get paid for it.
This is another popular way to earn money with your phone. There are many apps that allow you to take paid surveys. Of course, using the word “opportunity” may be a bit generous, as the pay is often quite low. You’ll want to keep your expectations in check and don’t plan on making a fortune doing it.
Kathy Kristoff is the founder of SideHusl.com, a site that reviews other sites that allow people to make money. He says that many of the surveys and cashing apps and sites that allow you to earn money on your phone can be done while you’re sprawled out on the couch watching a football game on your phone, but generally, this isn’t the type. money that pays for vacation.
“We estimate that if you’re successful and productive, you’ll make $2 to $3 an hour,” he says. That’s not much. “But it’s more than you’d normally get from watching a football game,” says Christophe.
Some paid survey apps you can check out include:
- Branded surveys.
- Google Opinion Rewards.
There are many others. As with cash back sites, these paid survey apps all work differently and you may not enjoy working with all of them equally. In fact, you might not enjoy working with any of them, which brings us to our next tip.
3. Find sites or activities that you enjoy.
Since you probably can’t make money from your phone, it makes sense to spend time trying to make money in your spare time doing something you enjoy. If you want to offer your opinion on surveys, earning a few bucks an hour can be totally worth it. If that seems like hard work, there are certainly better ways to spend your time.
For example, Earth.fm is a site run by a non-profit organization that allows you to earn money by recording the sounds of nature. It’s a streaming site accessible on your phone or any device that searches for unique sounds from around the world, like frogs croaking in a swamp or thunder. Its founder, Catalin Zorzini, who is based in France, says that compensation “typically ranges from $100 to $300 per voice used per hour.”
That’s some seriously good cash you can earn on your phone, well over $2 or $3 an hour for hitting the record button. Still, you can record hours and hours of compelling sounds and, for whatever reason, not accept them on the site. But if you enjoy being in nature and getting out into the wilderness to listen to interesting and relaxing sounds, you may not care if you make money from it.
4. Sell items.
If you want to avoid hoarding things you no longer use and you’re not in the mood to donate your stuff, you can try selling some of your stuff using your phone.
Nicole Booz, founder and editor-in-chief of GenTwenty.com and GenThirty.com, says she’s made quite a bit of money selling out of her home on her phone.
“Instead of donating the things I already have, I’m selling them. No snapping,” Booz says.
He admits he has to get off his couch and do some work, but Booz says he’s made $6,000 over the past two years selling products on the Mercari.com app.
“It’s still pretty simple,” he says. “I keep things in a pile, then photograph them in a well-lit area, then list them while watching TV. I print the labels right from my phone, place the item in the shipping box, and schedule a USPS pickup.”
He adds: “I consider this a spare time hobby to spend some extra money and I wouldn’t even call it a side hustle.”
Of course, there are many apps that you can download to your phone and then earn money. Some of them include:
- Facebook Marketplace.
- The next door.
- 5 miles.
These sites all have their quirks and pros and cons. For example, eBay is great for selling things to the world. other sites like Facebook Marketplace, Nextdoor, or 5Miles may be better bets if you want to sell locally. Decluttr specializes in tech sales, so if you have an aging iPad to sell, this might be the place to go.
5. Always have a plan.
Brainstorming is very couch-friendly. You don’t have to come up with a 40-point business plan, but on the other hand, it wouldn’t be a bad idea. If you really want to make money from your phone, it will take some time and diligence. If you’re going to make a living making YouTube videos, for example, in addition to claiming some talent and getting people to watch you, you’ll probably need something to say or skills to demonstrate or impart information.
In other words, if you’re going to make serious money with your phone, whether it’s through paid surveys or selling your property, however you plan to do it, you need to put some time and energy into doing it. It might sound easy to make money with your phone, but unfortunately, you can’t actually make a phone call.
